Charlton Wiggins was recently honored with a scholarship to attend the Texas Normal Singing Schoolin Abilene, Texas this July. This was not a scholarship that Charlton applied for, but it was awarded to him because he exemplified the best qualities of a song leader and what the school stands for – that he endeavored to learn not only for himself but to be able to carry the tools he learned at the school back to his home congregation in order to encourage spiritual growth in others through singing as a congregation.
The scholarship is “in memory of the late Randy Daw – gospel preacher, hymn writer, musician, Singing School teacher, and friend of Jesus Christ – we have chosen to fund a single full scholarship ($495) each year. The student receiving this scholarship offer will be a returning student who has demonstrated not only musical excellence, but depth of spirituality, and a personal desire to dig deeply into the art and science of congregational, a cappella singing.”
The scholarship covers room, board and tuition for the full week of the school.

Charlton is trying to raise money to secure a vehicle and cover other costs associated with his travel as well as attend the two day Worship Leaders Conference on Friday and Saturday before the school starts on Sunday. If you would like to help Charlton with the cost of transportation you may write a check to Mebane Street Church of Christ and be sure to include “Charlton’s TNSS Trip” on the memo line. You can give the check to Steve Pollak or one of the elders, or you may place it in the contribution box in the foyer or give it to Charlton personally.

The school, which is celebrating it’s 75th Anniversary this year, will be held July 18-23, 2021, in Abilene, TX. Instructors teach music theory, shape note reading, principles of leading singing including hand patterns, history of music in the church as well as song leading labs and evening chapel service where every student leads a song every night. Women are also encouraged to attend and have a track specialized for them which emphasizes leading singing for ladies days and similar ladies only functions.
If you have questions you may ask Charlton and be sure to congratulate him! We are proud of you Charlton and thank you for being our song leader!
